Is a technical school right for you?

By Remington College Posted April 3, 2019

After graduating high school, the first question most people will ask you is, 'What are you going to do next?'

A  common expectation is to attend a university to earn a four-year degree or begin taking classes at a local community college. But those are not the only options.

If you aren't ready to commit to four years at a traditional institution, or if you're looking for a more hands-on experience in a specific field, a trade school could be the right option for you.

Here are a few reasons you should consider a technical school:

  1. It can take less time to complete.

Typically, when you think of a university, you think four-year degree. When you think of a community college, you think two-year degree. That's not always the case. According to a report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, the average time enrolled for an associate degree was 3.3 years, and the average time enrolled for a bachelor's degree was 5.1 years.  Many tech school programs can be completed in under two years and some can even be completed in under a year. 1

  1. They can be less expensive and get you into the workforce faster. 2

Not only can tuition be expensive at an average university, but think of all the time you're spending in the classroom instead of in the work field. Because people typically spend more time at a university, they can end up spending more money on tuition. Considering that student loan debt is now a crisis in the U.S., finding a less costly way to earn your degree can help. With a trade school, you could spend less money and get into the workforce faster. 1

  1. They offer you more convenience.

With new classes constantly beginning at a technical school, you can start sooner rather than be tied down to semesters. Plus, many programs combine online learning with practical labs to make studying even more convenient.

  1. You can get traditional classroom learning and hands-on experience.

Tech schools combine textbook learning with practical skills to help students become well-rounded. The hands-on experience students can receive during their program and through externships can make them more valuable to future employers. 2

  1. They can be plugged into the local community and industries.

Many trade schools are involved in the local community. At Remington College, it's part of our nonprofit mission. Our cosmetology and dental hygiene programs regularly provide free or discounted services to members of the communities they serve. We also look for experiences for our students, such as tours of local employment partners. We care about the places our students and staff members live and work, and we want to foster those connections.

  1. They provide the opportunity to prepare for certifications.

Tech schools help students prepare for valuable certifications that can help them stand out to future employers. For instance, HVAC technicians might work toward the EPA Universal Certification.

A career training program at a technical school could be just what you need to begin a long and fruitful career.

Remington College has been helping prepare students for success in trade school careers for over 20 years.
